How to Avoid a High Septic Service Bill

A lot of people, especially those who live in rural areas, have a septic system instead of being connected to the city’s sewer system. Unfortunately, when someone has moved from an area that uses the sewer system to a place that uses a septic system, they often discover there is much about septic service they don’t know or understand. Below are some tips that you can use to help your septic service run well and avoid high bills.

• Conserve water- Wash your laundry throughout the week instead of all in one day, install toilets that conserve water, and use nozzles on your shower that reduce flow. Otherwise, your septic tank may be overtaxed and lead to a high septic service bill.

• Watch your landscaping- You should never put trees too close to your septic tank. Trees should be planted a minimum of 100 feet from your septic system. Trees that have an aggressive root system, like willows, need to be planted much further away. Otherwise, you may discover that you are having a bigger problem and need to pay a high septic service bill.

• Watch what you flush- Don't flush things like disposable diapers, tampons, facial tissues, paper towels, cigarette butts, sanitary napkins, or coffee grounds. These kinds of things can fill your septic tank quickly and clog it.
