Some Basic Sump Pump Maintenance Tips

Most sump pumps have flood or water level alarms which are battery powered to let you know when the pump is not working correctly and water is backing up. However, as with any piece of important equipment, regular maintenance of a sump pump is necessary. Every couple of months, spend a few minutes in early spring, or when heavy rain is forecast, to ensure your sump pump is operating reliably.

Basic maintenance is as simple as the following few jobs:

• Ensure the sump pump is plugged into a working GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet and that the cord is in good condition. GFCI breakers might trip in damp areas, effectively shutting the sump pump off. Check the pump periodically in case the GFCI needs resetting.
• Make sure the sump pump itself stands upright. During operation, vibrations may cause it to tilt or fall onto one side. This could jam the float arm and render it unable to activate the pump.
• From time to time, pour a bucket of water into the pit to ensure the sump pump starts automatically and the water drains rapidly when the pump is on. If it doesn’t start, have it serviced.
• Remove a submersible pump physically from the pit and clean the grate. The pulling action of the pump can suck small stones into the grate, damaging the pump or blocking the inlet.
• Make sure the outlet pipes are joined tightly together and they drain out at least 20 feet away from your foundation.
• Be sure to keep the vent hole in the discharge pipe clear.
